What is Fernie known for?
Fernie, BC is a little mountain town located in the east Kootenay region in the southeastern corner of British Columbia. It is known for its powder, getting up to 30 feet of snow annually in the winter season. Although this gives Fernie popularity during the ski season, there’s plenty of outdoor activities to do in Fernie year round.
Is Fernie worth visiting in the summer?
Definitely!! Although Fernie is known for its powder, it’s also a fantastic place to adventure in the summer and fall. Hiking and mountain biking in Fernie are some of the best that British Columbia has to offer, so let’s jump into some outdoor activities to do in Fernie during any season!
Check out Mt Proctor
- Head to Mount Proctor for a mountain bike lap of Swine Flu – one of the most fun ups and downs in the valley!
- Go trail running to Fairy Creek Waterfall. At 4.5 km and 105 m in elevation this out & back trail is the perfect place for a trail run with a rewarding waterfall at the end!
- If you’re looking to conquer the mountain, try Mount Proctor Trail for a full day adventure consisting of 22.7 km and 1,456 m elevation (always the option to just try a portion of the trail!).
Outdoor activities at Mt Fernie Provincial Park
- Access amazing mountain bike trails in the area – Project 9 is a popular trail at 12 km and 413 m elevation with rocks, little drops and a rollercoaster vibe.
- If you’re just getting into riding, try Lazy Lizard – a smooth, flowy beginner trail with some small berms and bridge crossings. The perfect cross country trail!
- If you want to legit hike up the mountain with your bike but be rewarded with a sick view try Stove Trail > Mushroom Head > Lactic Ridge > Stupid Traverse > Slunt – have fun ;).
- If you don’t want to hike or peddle at all, go for a day of mountain biking at Fernie Alpine Resort bike park – lift access.
Walk around Fernie’s historic downtown
- Take a break from the action to see Fernie’s charming downtown that includes many restored heritage buildings!
- Grab a mean cup of coffee from Rooftop Coffee Roasters.
- Enjoy some dinner at Nevados ChilangoFernie or the Brick House (get the truffle fries).
Hike up for a beautiful view of Fernie
- At 7.7 km and 466 m elevation, Castle Mountain Trail is the perfect way to get a view of the valley.
- Choose one of the many hiking and walking trails in the area.
- Alternatively, opt for your MTB instead as Castle Mountain has some gnarly trails to cruise. Take a look at the top rated black diamond trails, Hyperventilation and Hyperextension.
Post-activity reward
- Cap off all the outdoor activities in Fernie with a cold, refreshing beer at Fernie Brewing Co.
- Alternatively, take your shot at the Fernie Trails to Ale challenge and conquer Hyperventilation, Project 9 and Swine Flu by bike, run or hike all within 24 hours and earn yourself a cold beer and bragging rights.
Camping in Fernie
- Mt Fernie Provincial Park has a wonderful campground that is in walkable/bike able distance to some amazing trails! All reservations must be made through the reservation system, however, there are some spots available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
- Additionally, if you want something a little more rustic, off the beaten path and without close neighbors try some of Fernie’s Recreation camping to truly unplug!
